Councils use local laws to respond to issues and community needs and complement the council's responsibilities and powers under both state and federal laws. Where appropriate, councils may adopt local laws to protect public health, safety and amenity in a municipality and to govern the use of the Common Seal.
Local laws passed by councils are designed to ensure the actions of an individual or group do not have an adverse impact on the rest of the community and only apply within the municipality in which they are passed.
