Community members invited to Talking About Your Generation, a digital storytelling project screening in St Arnaud and Stawell

Northern Grampians Shire Council invites community members to attend screenings of Talking About Your Generation, a digital storytelling project that screens at St Arnaud Library on 17 July from 7pm and at Stawell Entertainment Centre on 22 July at 7pm.

Talking About Your Generation commenced with the start of the school year and everyone involved invested considerable time, energy, and effort to develop a collection of intergenerational documentaries exploring community themes and supporting connection across the generations.

“This project has some really important outcomes. We live in an ageing community and by connecting students from Stawell and St Arnaud Secondary Colleges with older people in their communities we saw big gains in awareness of issues facing different generations, and an overall increase in feelings of connection.

“Students grew in skill and confidence, learning documentary making and knowing that their voice was heard. Older participants were impressed by the students’ creativity, respect and openness and reported an increase in feelings of connection, health and wellbeing.”

Other reported outcomes from intergenerational projects include improved physical and mental health through improved social connections, increased confidence and self esteem, feeling valued, skill sharing and empowering all generations to have a voice.

Northern Grampians Shire Council is grateful for the funding that came from Western Victoria Primary Health Network and VicHealth allowing council to create innovative work across primary and secondary schools, local residents, and aged care providers. The project was ably facilitated by Thrive 50+ Healthy Ageing Hub and Council’s Community Health and Engagement Officer.

I commend the screenings that resulted from this project and urge community members to attend," Cr Haswell said.
