Roads and streets

Council is the relevant rural authority for approximately 3408 kms of local roads as well as the bridges, footpaths and other ancillary assets.

Council has developed a Road Management Plan pursuant to the Road Management Act 2004.

The Road Management Plan sets minimum maintenance standards for the road assets based on an established hierarchy. It sets a program for safety and defect inspections and response times for rectifying defects on the road network.

Other roads within the shire that are maintained by other road authorities include:

Highways

These roads are maintained by the Department of Transport and Planning (formerly VicRoads) and their contractors and include Western Highway, Sunraysia Highway and Wimmera Highway.

Street Trees

Council is responsible for street and naturestrip trees in our townships and the community can play an important part in protecting the health of our trees.

Please do not place lawn and grass clippings around the trunks of trees as this can lead to multiple health issues for the tree including fungal decay/rot, decreased oxygen levels and a change in the pH levels of the soil.  (Below is a diagram on the correct mulching around trees).

Residents are reminded to adhere to these correct procedures and are encouraged to contact council if you require any additional pruning or mulch to trees that are council owned. If you require any further information regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me on 03 5358 8700 during office hours.
